The story of Caretti Grande is genuinely captivating. The farm’s unwavering focus on livestock, agriculture, and cereal production is well-documented in historical and ecclesiastical records, which is a testament to its longevity. Even more impressive is its role in promoting technological innovation and cultural dissemination.
Caretti Grande pioneered installing electrical systems for lighting the manor house, school, and small chapel back in the early 1900s, and the hydraulic system powered by a large wind shovel is still in use for domestic and agricultural purposes today. The farm’s contribution to education is also noteworthy, as it provided essential schooling to children from nearby farms who would not have had access otherwise due to the isolated location impacting positively on the local community.
Today, the organic farm consists of a large area of diversified land, including Mediterranean maquis for pastures, sensible land, olive groves, and vineyards. With three generations of family experience, they are dedicated to improving agricultural and pastoral activities.
Furthermore, Caretti Grande, sensitive to ecological and environmental issues, actively supports the research program on the biodiversity of old native crops, such as cultivating some grasses, ancient fruit trees, and medicinal plants and herbs of the Mediterranean maquis. Nonetheless, the architectural structure of the building itself has been designed to serve as an educational and cultural space for meetings and events.
